Sponza’s history
The oldest building was first mentioned in 1296, however, with the economic rise of Dubrovnik, a new building was built from 1516 – 1520. It was designed by the architect Pasko Milicevic in the Renaissance Gothic style, using a combination of both styles. It was supposed to be the Customs of Dubrovnik, however over the years, it had different purposes too: the building was a school, a bank, and an armory. The Andrijic brothers from Korcula built the Palace, together with many other stonemasons.
The 1667 Dubrovnik earthquake ruined many houses in Dubrovnik and demolished more than three-quarters of all public buildings in the area. It was one of the strongest earthquakes ever recorded in the region. Luckily, the Sponza Palace remained intact and it was one of the few buildings that wasn’t destroyed in the big earthquake.
Today, the Sponza Palace is home to the city’s archives and one of the most beautiful Dubrovnik wedding ceremony venues. The famous Sponza Palace offers the chance to exchange your vows in an ancient, historical building that will leave everyone in awe.
